Couple of New Resources + Rhinospike
Thanks to Kevin for commenting on the last post and sharing a couple of excellent Korean resources. Follow this link to find a translation of a talk from TED recorded in Korean, as well as an article from Antimoon on how to avoid mistakes as an English learner – perfect stuff English teachers like myself should be learning to say in Korean to beginners of the language.
Kevin also mentions something which is a potentially fantastic site for those of us looking to help build the new Korean LingQ library, as per my last post. A quick look around and I was disappointed at the poor quality of some of the voice recordings, though the female voice recording of the English mistakes article above was excellent. If we can find speakers with good voices who can produce good quality recordings for us, this could be a huge step in the right direction for our project.

Hey,
I visit your blog like once a week to check out new posts. Really appreciate the the info you put up on here about learning Korean.
I was wondering about how would one make a transition from a beginners Korean to intermediate. I guess it’s somewhat hard to define what intermediate is however in my case I still consider myself a hi level beginner and I’d like to move on to the next level
I’m a bit embarrassed to say that I’ve been interested in learning Korean for about 5 years but never really took it seriously until this year. After 5 years I’m still a beginner. My Korean listening is probably up to an intermediate level because I do listen to A LOT of Korean movies, TV and I’m around a lot of Koreans because my wife is Korean. Unfortunately my speaking and writing utterly sucks. I have a really good Korean pronunciation because of all that listening But the problem I have with writing and speaking is just a LACK of vocabulary and key words. I would say I roughly know a bit under 1000 Korean words maybe?? Maybe I’m underestimating..
I also don’t live in Korea.( no excuse, just saying =p)
KoreanClass101 has helped me A LOT but I have to say it does get boring and repetitive especially listening to beginners/ low intermediate content.
SRSing doesn’t help me AT ALL. What it does is it trains my brain to remember the words/sentences when i see them in ANKI. The minute i leave anki i cant remember / use what I’ve memorize to save my life. Maybe I’m using Anki wrong but I don’t enjoy SRSing and It hasn’t helped me at all. After 4 months of using it i decided not to anymore.
I’m waiting for LingQ to add Korean. I’m hoping that will help me with learning new vocab faster.
SOOOO If you have any tips for studying/learning new vocabulary in an efficient manner other than SRS I’d love to hear about it. ( that is if you don’t mind sharing ) Finding interesting Korean content isn’t really difficult, the problem is to find content that fits my level and that will introduce me to the vocab i want/ should be learning which isn’t over bearing. I love to read Korean its just frustrating when you don’t know 80% of words they use or the endless verb/adjective endings that essentially mean basically the same thing just slightly changes the meaning =p. I just feel like I’ve plateaued, I’m not learning vocabulary fast enough and haven’t budged at all and I think I need to start doing something differently.
My overall goal with korean is to be able to communicate with natives ( mainly my wifes family and friends in korea) and understanding korean content (ie movies and tv withouht having to rely on subtitles or wife to translate). It frustrating to always ask my wife to translate the korean i dont understand when my mother inlaw talks to me. ITs very embarrassing to say the least. I HAVE everythin at my finger tips to learn korean, I know i can do it and i have no excuses why i CANT. I’m already bilingual in French and English, I’ve never learnt a language as an adult ( i learnt french and english as a child). Being bilingual has help me greatly But I’m struggling with the learning process. I’m not only learning how to speak, read , write in korean but I have to struggle with learning how to LEARN efficiently, if that makes anysense….
Anyways I appreciate any feedback. Sorry for the long comment.
Thanks
7up
